Every year, many couples from all over the world come to Europe to get their prewedding photos taken. They visit iconic places like Paris, with the Eiffel Tower and Arc de Triomphe, or Venice with its canals. The Netherlands (or Holland) is often overlooked but has a lot to offer when it comes to prewedding photography. Amsterdam serves as the perfect backdrop for a prewedding session in Europe. There are two more locations that the Netherlands is known for, which are slowly becoming more and more popular: the tulip fields of Keukenhof and the windmills at Zaanse Schans. In this post, you can see some prewedding photos I shot of Allison and Jonathan, who visited from Hong Kong for their Keukenhof & Zaanse Schans pre wedding.
Prewedding at the windmill village of Zaanse Schans
The windmill village of Zaanse Schans, about 20 minutes outside of Amsterdam, is where Dutch culture and architecture are being showcased for the world to see. Several beautifully restored windmills from the 16th century are lined up along the water and a cute little village gives a peek of what life used to be like in the Netherlands. It’s no wonder this place is so popular with tourist and prewedding couples alike. Each windmill has a different color and unique characteristics making the views along the water simply breathtaking. It does not get more Dutch than this. Being so close to Amsterdam, this town is the perfect spot to combine prewedding photos in Amsterdam with some iconic windmill shots.
Prewedding photography at the flower gardens of the Keukenhof
As mentioned before, another iconic symbol of the Netherlands is the tulip. Every year around April and early May, millions of tulips and other flowers bloom in the countryside, making this a truly beautiful spectacle to observe. As you approach the village of Lisse, where the world’s most known flower garden of ‘de Keukenhof‘ is located, you see the multi-colored flower fields as far as the eye can see. With a different theme every year, this flower garden is exceptionally beautiful and a must for some prewedding photos when you are visiting Holland in April or early May.
Prewedding session at the tulip fields in Holland
The flower gardens are one place to observe the many beautiful flowers, but right outside the park is another gem: the multi-colored tulip fields. With colors ranging from yellow to red, orange and purple, this place is truly magical and the perfect backdrop for prewedding photography in Europe. In the examples below you can see some of the photos I took for Allison and Jonathan during their Keukenhof & Zaanse Schans pre wedding. I hope you enjoy the photos!
